Objective Functional Testing to Quantify Physical Capacity, Work Tolerance & Injury-Related Limits
A comprehensive, objective assessment used to determine an individual’s measurable physical abilities, functional tolerances, and work-related limitations following injury.
Administered by a licensed Physical or Occupational Therapist trained in functional testing, the evaluation assesses the claimant’s ability to safely perform essential material handling tasks such as lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling, in addition to functional movements required for daily living and occupational participation.
Testing includes analysis of positional and postural tolerances, stair climbing, stooping, crouching, kneeling, crawling, reaching, balance, foot control, grip strength, pinch strength, fine motor coordination, sensation, and overall work endurance. Standardized consistency-of-effort measures are incorporated throughout the examination to evaluate reliability of performance and validity of findings.
The FCE provides objective, data-driven documentation of residual functional capacity and identifies how injury-related impairments impact an individual’s ability to perform day-to-day activities and meet the physical demands of employment. These findings are frequently utilized in return-to-work determinations, disability evaluations, permanency assessments, and medical-legal case analysis.
